Detroit Tigers closed out the Jahmai Jones era on Wednesday with a trade that sends the infielder to a new club.
Jones, 26, was moved Tuesday night as Detroit cleared roster room for in-season additions. The Tigers sit 12th in the American League at 44-52, losers of five straight after a 0-5 blanking by the Philadelphia Phillies on July 12.
The move frees up a spot for a fresh face while the club eyes the July 31 deadline. Detroit’s bullpen has coughed up 17 runs over the last three games, a leak that can’t be ignored as the roster tightens.
Jones leaves with a .241 slash line and 12 RBIs in 68 games this year. The Tigers now turn to internal options and possible waiver pickups to fill the gap before the trade deadline. Manager A.J. Hinch said the club wants to add “pitching depth and a bat that can mash lefties.”
Detroit’s 44-52 record leaves them 12 games back of Cleveland in the AL Central. A late-season push starts with shoring up the bullpen, where relievers have posted a 5.12 ERA since June 1.
